The New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (NYSOPEP) in the central region is conveniently located at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. University Hospital is a 350-bed patient care facility, which is the premier academic, research and medical facility for the region. University Health Care Center, which is three blocks from the Hospital, and University Health Care at Manlius, are the multi-specialty ambulatory care facilities of the University and provide services such as the Metabolic Bone Disease Center, Breast Care Center and Women’s Imaging, Geriatric Center including the Alzheimer’s Disease and Assistance Center of Central New York, Joslin Diabetes Center, University Endocrinologists and Osteoporosis Center, General Internal Medicine, Pediatric & Adolescent Center, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Family Medicine.

The recently opened Institute for Human Performance is located on the SUNY Upstate Medical University campus. It is a $50 million facility, which houses an array of interactive enterprises dedicated to biomedical and clinical research, rehabilitation and education. These areas work together to dissolve the limitations of disease, disability and aging. The facility has a full line of resistance equipment suitable for all ages and abilities, a track, cardiovascular exercise equipment, a pool with a ramp entry and adjustable floor height and open spaces for exercise programs. There are also meeting rooms and offices. This building is used for exercise classes and programs for those with or at risk for osteoporosis as well as educational programs for patients and professionals.

The foundation for our Osteoporosis Education and Prevention Program has been in place at our Medical University since 1989 through the activities of the Metabolic Bone Disease Center (MBDC), which is based in the Department of Medicine. The expertise and multi-disciplinary aspects of members of the MBDC have given us vast experience as the leader in the upstate New York region for organizing professional education programs, conducting extensive outreach activities for the lay public and in the work place environment, and actively participating in numerous clinical research studies for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and related bone diseases. As a member of the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Professional Partners Network, the MBDC is frequently contacted by physicians, nurses, lay people, and media representatives seeking information about osteoporosis. The location of our educational activities has been geographically extensive, ranging from Syracuse to Elmira, Utica, Ilion, Fulton, Norwich, Binghamton, Watertown, Cortland, Skaneateles and other towns and cities.
