The Helen Hayes Hospital Osteoporosis Center provides a full scope of services in the prevention, identification and treatment of osteoporosis. Drawing on our cutting-edge research, the expertise of a diverse team of specialists, the high quality of our bone density measurement program, and the unparalleled depth and range of services available within the physical rehabilitation hospital, the Center is well equipped to help individuals build and maintain healthy bones and recuperate from disabling fractures. New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (NYSOPEP): As the state’s coordinating center for NYSOPEP, the team at Helen Hayes Hospital educates consumers and medical professionals about osteoporosis prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. NYSOPEP professionals develop and disseminate current and accurate information about osteoporosis, as well as establish and provide training and education programs. 845-786-4772 (or 1-888-70-REHAB, ext. 4772)

Bone Density Testing:

State-of -the art bone densitometers are used by certified radiation technologists to measure current bone mass and evaluate a person’s risk for osteoporosis Bone density testing is the only definitive method for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. All individuals who break a bone with minimal trauma over age 40, all women age 65 and over, postmenopausal women with risk factors, men with risk factors for osteoporosis, and individuals who take or are about to take long-term steroid medications are urged to discuss the need for a bone density test with their doctor.

Physician Evaluation/Counseling:

Appointments can be made with board certified, specialty physicians who can diagnose and treat osteoporosis and its complications.

Physical Therapy:

Therapists who specialize in bone and muscle disorders provide both inpatient and outpatient therapy to help restore mobility following fracture.

Exercise Classes:

Both aquatic therapy classes and individualized exercise programs in the hospital’s Wellness Center are available to help participants maintain strength, balance, flexibility and healthy bones.

Osteoporosis Support & Education Groups:

Speakers provide individuals with osteoporosis and their families with evidence-based education about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. The support groups meet monthly at Helen Hayes Hospital and at community locations throughout the Hudson Valley Region. These programs are coordinated by the NYSOPEP team.

Research Opportunities:

Individuals who qualify are welcome and encouraged to participate in ongoing research studies, which examine new medications and prevention techniques.
