Bone Density Testing:

Early detection of osteoporosis is crucial for the effective treatment and prevention of continued bone deterioration. Measuring bone density is a reliable means of predicting an individual’s risk of future bone fracture. By using a sophisticated bone scanner, physicians can determine lifetime fracture risk. Repeated over time, bone density measurements can help your doctor track the rate of bone loss and monitor changes with therapy.

A bone density test is performed by a scanner that uses computers to measure bone mass and estimate bone strength. The test is non-invasive, fast, painless and safe. A valuable indicator in predicting the likelihood of fracture, a bone density scan involves no special preparation.

Bone density screening is recommended for all women after menopause. It is also recommended for both men and women, regardless of age, who have symptoms or are high risk of developing osteoporosis including, back pain, height loss, lean body mass, prior fractures, aging, long term steroid use, decreased estrogen or testosterone, low dairy intake, chronic smoking, excessive alcohol use.
