Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is the nation's first orthopedic hospital, founded in 1863, and a world leader in the treatment and research of bone disorders. As No. 1 in the Northeast in Orthopedics and Rheumatology ("America's Best Hospitals", U.S. News & World Report, July/August, 2003), Hospital for Special Surgery's (HSS) mission is to exert in the fields of orthopedic surgery, rheumatology and their related sciences, a local, national and international leadership role, by providing a high quality standard of patient care and outstanding programs of education, research and development for the benefit of all.

As a participating organization in the Bone and Joint Decade, HSS strives to improve the health-related quality of life for people with musculoskeletal disorders throughout the world. HSS brings together key resources integral to the achievement of NYSOPEP's goal to reduce public health impact of osteo-related fractures. This is accomplished through:

  1. a renowned and committed team of physicians, researchers, physical therapists, educators and administrators,
  2. a preeminent Osteoporosis Center that provides testing, comprehensive treatment, counseling, and education
  3. targeted, culturally sensitive outreach, public education programs for all ages with a solid, active network through the New York and metropolitan area.
  4. programs such as a support group, school-based programs for adolescent girls and boys, peer outreach to encourage at-risk groups to get bone density scans, osteoporosis exercise classes, special collaboration to reach people with disabilities, range of public information materials in English, Chinese and Spanish,
  5. an extensive and involved community network and health information outreach program, and
  6. a dedicated Education Division that directs the project.


The Education Division at Hospital for Special Surgery is committed to being the source for outstanding initiatives in education, training, research and information for local, national and international communities to prevent and treat musculoskeletal conditions. The Education Division NYSOPEP team is dedicated to raising osteoporosis awareness among the diverse cultural groups in this area by developing, implementing and evaluating innovative osteoporosis educational and research initiatives.

THE OSTEOPOROSIS CENTER AT HSS

HSS's Osteoporosis Center is recognized globally, particularly renowned for its ongoing efforts to provide broad-based education to healthcare professionals, the public and the many people whose lives are affected by this disease. Dedicated to osteoporosis prevention through education, the Osteoporosis center provides the a wide-array of services, including:

  • Bone mass measurements using the most advanced testing equipment
  • Individual counseling and education based on the results of the bone mass measurement, risk factors, lifestyle and medical histories
  • Comprehensive treatment plans for patients with osteoporosis consisting of nutrition, exercise and medication
  • Referrals to physicians, physical therapists, and nutritionists, as indicated
