Conclusions from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI)

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) began in 1991.  It is a 15-year research program that consists of a number of clinical trials and an observational study that has included more than 161,000 healthy postmenopausal women.  The purpose of the WHI is to study the most common causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women-- osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancer.
