NOF's Updated Recommendations for Calcium and Vitamin D Intake

On July 26, 2007 the National Osteoporosis Foundation released its updated recommendations for calcium and vitamin D intake. The recommendations were the consensus among leading experts based on substantial research findings.

Calcium

According to the NOF recommendations, adults under age 50 need 1,000 mg of calcium daily, and adults age 50 and over need 1,200 mg of calcium daily

Vitamin D

According to the NOF recommendations,  adults under age 50 need 400 to 800 IU of vitamin D3 daily, and adults age 50 and older need 800-1000 IU of vitamin D3 daily. Vitamin D3 (called cholecalciferol) is form of vitamin D that is most bioavailable for use by the body to support strong bones.
