Community Education Programs
“Osteobusters” is a community-based, peer-led exercise and education program that promotes strong bones for life. The Osteobusters program is made possible by a partnership between the New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (NYSOPEP) Northeastern Regional Center at Glens Falls Hospital, regional Retired Senior Volunteer Programs (RSVP), and numerous community-based agencies and organizations where classes are held. The classes typically host 12-25 participants from 50 to more than 90 years of age. The exercise program consists of weight-bearing, muscle-strengthening, postural training and balance exercises. Educational programs and publications on topics related to osteoporosis and bone health are offered as well. Osteobusters classes are led by trained senior volunteers. Volunteer leaders attend an initial, new leader training, a mandatory annual refresher class, and additional training and education as needed. For information, please contact the NYSOPEP Northeastern Regional Center at 1-866-247-8759 (toll free) or 518-926-5919.
Community-based, population-specific educational programs and workshops addressing evidence-based education regarding the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis are offered. Opportunities for collaboration with community stakeholders and service providers addressing prevention and adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors are sought. These programs are coordinated by the NYSOPEP Northeastern Regional Center’s Program Coordinator, Erin Krivitski, PsyD. For additional information, please call 1-866-247-8759 (toll free) or 518-926-5919
